The Issue
Many food processing facilities perform a range of processes that require natural gas combustion. Steam generation used for processes such as blanching, scalding, pasteurizing, and slicing require large amounts of heat. Supplementing heat required for thermal processes with solar thermal energy could significant reduce natural gas consumption and GHG emissions in dairy processing industries. However, there is a lack of successful, high-temperature demonstrations of solar thermal energy system sin dairy processing facilities.
Project Innovation
The purpose of this project is to design, install, and operate a solar boiler at the Recipient's almond processing facility. The system will substantially replace the use of natural gas with solar thermal energy for steam generation, resulting in a reduction in greenhouse gas and criteria pollutants emissions.
Project Benefits
This project will result in GHG and criteria pollutant emission reductions by using solar thermal energy to offset natural gas consumption at the facility.

Environmental Sustainability
This project is expected to reduce GHG emissions by approximately 2,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
