The Issue
Refrigeration systems that utilize refrigerants such as R22, R404A, and R410A contribute to GHG due to their high global warming potential (GWP) rating of approximately 2,000 – 4,000. At J&J Snack Foods, a large built-up central system utilizing R-717 refrigerant, with 0 GWP is already in place. In order to stay committed to the goal of reducing GHG emissions, systems need to be upgraded without degrading performance. Additionally, industrial food manufacturing processes require large amounts of heat. Much of the heat escapes the processes through hot exhaust streams, and additional fuel must be burned to make up for the lost heat.
Project Innovation
The purpose of this project is to fund the upgrade from the existing built-up ammonia refrigeration system, installation of heat recovery components, and installation of an industrial size fryer. These improvements will result in both direct and indirect greenhouse gas emission reductions through the reduction in energy consumption by the refrigeration system, and natural gas required for hot water and frying food.
Project Benefits
This project will result in both direct and indirect greenhouse gas emission reductions through the reduction in energy consumption by the refrigeration system, and natural gas required for hot water and frying food. The project is consistent with the California Energy Commission's mission of leading the state to a 100 percent clean energy future.

Environmental Sustainability
This project is expected to reduce GHG emissions by approximately 600 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year through the reduction in energy consumption by the refrigeration system, and natural gas required for hot water and frying food.
