Project Update

As of February 21, 2025, 35 dairies subscribed in total, and 30 dairies are up and running and collecting data. The draft final report was submitted on December 10, 2024. The draft final report was submitted in an older version and returned for edits to Zira on December 16, 2024, with comments on both format and content. An online meeting was held on January 17, 2025, to provide feedback and discuss timelines. An email received from Zira 2/19/2025 indicated that a revised final report would be received by the beginning of March. 3/25/2025 Zira submitted a revised final report which is currently being reviewed.

The Issue

Dairy plants with little to no automation or digital capabilities have been unable to improve operations through energy optimizations of: Cooling and refrigeration systems, Compressed air systems, and Dairy production systems and pumps.

Project Innovation

This project will enable dairy plants with little to no automation or digital capabilities to improve operations through energy optimizations of: Cooling and refrigeration systems, Compressed air systems, and Dairy production systems and pumps. The proposed project will deploy a comprehensive operation digitization system and generate insights and drive action based primarily on data acquired from electricity meters. Installation of 20 power meters and data collection services as demonstrations to be used with marketing activities. These three sites will help show business case on three types of dairy manufacturers that differ in size and product. The power meters will be installed on Cooling and refrigeration systems, compressed air systems and major pumps and mixers to cover 75% of the facilities electricity consumption.

Project Goals

Automate the process of energy optimization at dairy manufacturing plants to achieve the minimum possible kWh consumption.

Project Benefits

Taking into account the higher energy savings that will come from the deployment of a machine learning algorithm, a 20% reduction in energy savings is estimated.

Energy Security

Energy Security

The deployment of an automated software based energy optimization system will reduce energy demand at dairy and dairy related facilities lowering overall electrical demand.

Lower Costs

Affordability

The deployment of an automated software based energy optimization system will reduce energy demand and consumption at dairy and dairy related facilities lowering overall electrical demand and cost. Also, lowering of electrical demand at dairy and dairy related facilities could provide grid benefits.
