The Issue
Mechanical steam traps are one of the leading causes for steam loss within a steam system. While methods exist to monitor the performance of the steam traps, this is labor intensive and requires knowledge on how to accurately assess performance. Often steam traps will fail and cause a substantial amount of steam loss, which increases natural gas use and GHG emissions and causes process and production issues. With natural gas prices being at an all-time low, there is a cost barrier to implementing new energy efficient technologies to reduce natural gas use and GHG emissions.
Project Innovation
The purpose of this project is to fund the installation of state-of-the-art steam traps at the Recipient's dairy processing facility. The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing failed mechanical traps and improving the overall efficiency of steam trapping and condensate recovery at the plants.
Project Benefits
The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing failed mechanical traps and improving the overall efficiency of steam trapping and condensate recovery at the plants. The project is consistent with the California Energy Commission's mission of leading the state to a 100 percent clean energy future.
Environmental Sustainability
This project is expected to reduce GHG emissions by approximately 1,072 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year and NOx emissions by approximately 2.5 tons per year.
